• THE VERY WORST DEATH SCENES

Thelma & Louise drive off a cliff in the last frame rather than the first.

E.T.’s heartlight goes out. Then comes back on.

The first 4 minutes of every Disney movie.

Scanners guy head explodes. So bad it’s…nah, it’s still really bad.

Billy Zane takes a flare in the mouth in Dead Calm. Should’ve been Kidman.

The opening scene of Jaws, because it scared me and now I can’t go swimming anymore.

  • BEST DEATHS:

    Lots of legendary “falling to his or her” death scenes in Hitchcock movies like “Vertigo” and “Saboteur” (1942). Also, must include the handgun suicide at the end of Hitch’s “Spellbound.” A classic.

    Not sure if this is Godfather I or II, but the scene in the restaurant where Al Pacino gets the hidden gun from the rest room and then shoots the dirty cop in the head while he’s eating. He continues talking and chewing for a second until the rest of his body realizes there’s a bullet in his brain and then slumps over dead. (I hate when that happens).

    “Miller’s Crossing” has a gratuitously violent scene where Albert Finney is shooting a tommygun at an escaping car for about a minute until it explodes and kills the occupents. It’s pure, sexy violence set to dramatic music.

    Andy Garcia getting his head cut off in “Black Rain.” (Which may have set the trend for the decapitations that are now prevalent in just about every action movie these days. Now it’s a cliche.)

    WORST DEATH: “Star II: The Wrath of Khan.” Near the end, Khan’s son–mortally injured by a Photon torpedo blast–dies in his father’s arms. Then Khan goes to hug his dead son….except that moron-actor playing the deceased lad CLOSES HIS EYES before he gets too close to Ricardo Montalban’s manly musk. (Apparently in the 23rd century, people can shut their eyes, even after they’re dead. I didn’t know that.)

  • Worst death scene = Sophia Coppola in Godfather III.

    Unless you’re going for unintentionally funniest death scene, then it’s the best.
